Robert Henricksen is a brown belt in Brazilian JiuJitsu under his longtime friend and coach, James Terlecki. Robert has trained with James at Next Level Martial Arts Academy in Youngstown, OH since 2005, earning his brown belt in February of 2014. In that time he has had several amateur MMA fights and numerous Brazilian JiuJitsu and submission grappling tournaments. He has been an instructor at James’ academy for the last five years.
Prior to his training at Next Level, Robert began training in martial arts at the age of 10, studying Tang SooDo in Juneau, Alaska under Bruce and Karen Massey. At the age of 28 Robert moved to Las Cruces, NM in 2004, and would travel to El Paso, TX to train in Judo under Sensei Hayashi at Hayashi’s Dojo. This is where he was introduced to Brazilian JiuJitsu, first hand. He moved to Youngstown, OH in 2005 and immediately sought out Brazilian JiuJitsu instruction and found James.
In 2008-09, Robert took a brief hiatus from Next Level and moved to Las Vegas, NV to train at Xtreme Couture. During his time there Robert worked with many high level MMA fighters and Brazilian JiuJitsu practitioners, gaining much valuable experience. But, alas, Las Vegas and Xtreme Couture was not home so in 2009 Robert returned to Youngstown where he resumed his training with his family at Next Level.
Now the time has come for Robert to bring his extensive knowledge and experience to the Shenango Valley. With the support of his friends and family at Next Level and the martial arts community, Robert is bringing his valuable knowledge, life and martial arts experience to share with the people of this community; to help men and women better their lives, learn about themselves and to help parents to raise up children to be strong in discipline and character. Robert knows firsthand the powerful and transformative effect that martial arts, and Brazilian JiuJitsu inparticular can have in the lives of children and adults alike.
Zane first started training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with his dad, Robert, at Next Level Martial Arts Academy in 2005. At the time, Zane was nine years old and Next Level did not have a kid’s martial arts program so Zane was training with adults. This was frustrating for him so he took some time off and again began training, in full force, in 2010. Because of his prior experience with BJJ, wrestling, and natural ability, Zane progressed very quickly as a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Submission grappling practitioner and competitor.
Zane received his purple belt in mid-2014 at the age of 18 and has become one of the top competitors in the area, winning double and triple gols in virtually every competiton he does. But even more than the accolades he has received in competition and in the gym, Zane has grown to be a young man of outstanding character and discipline. As a children’s martial arts instructor, Zane is compassionate, caring, and gentle but at the same time firm and clear spoken; a combination of characteristics which has inspired his students admiration and respect.
“As Zane’s father, I could not be more proud. I am lucky to have him working beside me in helping kids and adults alike realize all the benefits and blessings Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and martial arts has brought to our lives. This young man is truly a role model.”
